AmaOneTya started as a group of Capetonians interested in the skill/art/fun of Unicycling. Like many groups wanting to establish an identity, AmaOneTya wanted to create a focus on Unicycling and at the same time bring elements of South Africa into it. We are proudly South African and therefore the name Ama One Tya is uniquely South African.
- The word Ama comes from African languages, and means more than one. ie. More than one Unicyclist.
- One is pretty much self explanatory.
- Tya is an Africanisation of the word tyre and is pronounced, Tie-yah. The word tyre is preferred over wheel because within African translation a wheel is often referred to as a tyre. The reason for our spelling interpretation is that the word tyre is actually pronounced tie-yah within the African communities.
Other examples of this type of naming is:
- Ama Bokke Bokke - The South African Rugby Team
- Ama Glug Glug - The South African Under 23 Soccer Team (Olympic Team)
- Ama Krokka Krokka - The South African Para-Olympic Team
AmaOneTya is not associated with a single person or club, but rather a collective identity of anyone Proudly South African who happens to be a unicycling enthusiast. The existing logo is generic enough in order to allow other parts of the country to participate, and be part of AmaOneTya. We would like to encourage the greater collective of Unicycling enthusiasts to join us in being Proudly South African. Having said that though, we also like to encourage others around the globe to be part of our identity, and share in our customs and ideals.
